Why You Should Entrust Your Treatment to an ENT Specialist

ENT Specialist

An ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist is more formally known as an otolaryngologist. Our experienced ENT specialist in McAllen treats diseases and disorders of the ears, nose, throat and neighboring structures. He is a proud member of the oldest medical specialty in the United States.

Otolaryngologists undergo at least five years of additional specialized training after they have completed medical school. They must then take and pass an examination administered by the American Board of Otolaryngology in order to be certified as an ENT specialist.

Unlike many other doctors, our ENT specialist is trained in both medical and surgical procedures. He, therefore, doesn’t have to refer a patient that needs surgery to another doctor.

What are the Subspecialties?

The subspecialties of otolaryngology are:

  • Sleep disorders
  • Rhinology
  • Pediatric otolaryngology
  • Otology/neurotology
  • Laryngology
  • Head and neck
  • Plastic and reconstructive surgery of the face and related areas
  • Allergy

Rhinology concentrates on the nose and sinuses. Pediatric otolaryngology involves the treatment of children. An ENT specialist can also treat disorders affecting the ears. That includes conditions like tinnitus and various balance problems. They also treat hearing loss and injuries affecting the ears.

An ENT specialist who concentrates on plastic surgery will perform both reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. They can repair problems like a deviated septum, cleft palate and various ear deformities. They will also perform rhinoplasty and other procedures.

What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus or “ringing in the ear” is the annoying perception of hearing noises like ringing or buzzing when there is no source of such noises. It is extremely common and affects about 20 percent of the population. It can be caused by problems with the ear itself or with nerves connected to the ear or even the part of the brain that interprets sounds from nerve signals. In some cases, dizziness or hearing loss accompanies the tinnitus. In such cases, the patient should see our doctor as soon as possible.
